Coyhaique
Our trip to Coyhaique -- a very beautiful place
Parts of it reminded me of Wyoming. See the Trip Narrative.
- (Center picture) You can see the town of Coyhaique at the base of the mountain. Coyhaique is in the far south of Chile. We took a bus south from Valdivia to Puerto Monte. Then, we flew from Puerto Monte to Coyhaique. There is a primitive dirt road from Puerto Monte to Coyhaique that takes about a week to drive.
- This is way they cooked the lamb at the hotel in Coyhaique where we stayed for three days. There was a little wood stove in our room that we used every night to stay cozy.
- I went fishing in Coyhaique. I had good luck in the >morning, but then it rained and the fish stopped biting. This is a >picture of the countryside.
- This is a little town that the government built for the
>ranchers and their workers. The women and children move into town when
>school starts. There is a little school here as well.

- This is a fiord-like lake surronded by cliffs.

- We were hiking in a park when I took this picture. Tree line is at a very low altitude in this part of Patagonia--maybe 6000 feet. There is nothing but cold water surrounding Chile at this latitude. The summers are very cool very much like the coast in Alaska.
- This is looking toward the Pacific. The mountains are very rugged in this part of the Coastal Range.
- This is the same overlook as the previous slice. Eventhough the sun is out we still needed our fleece.
