Valdivia, Chile
Trip Narrative
- Here we are in Valdivia with the Rio Calle Calle in the back ground (turns into the Valdivia river on the other side of the bridge). The bridge goes over to Tech Island where the Astral University is located. Astral is part of the University of Chile system and WSU is working with Astral with a memorandum of understanding. It is a beautiful setting.
- We went to a farmers market one Saturday and here was squash. It is very tasty and used in soups and many other dishes. The price is 125 pesos per Kg., or about 10 cents per pound. Vegetables and fruits are cheap in the farmers markets.
- There is very little spicy food in Chile. This pictures shows the hot peppers that are used.

- We went to the fair which featured Mapuche (Native American) food. This bread was cooked in hot sand and then sand was scraped away from the crust. Good but a little gritty.
- This is the name of the bread in the previous slide.
- Rita and Amapola. We stayed with Amapola and Wagner.

- The Valdivia River at sunset looking West.
- Wagner and Amapola on a day when we went to a river and fished for trout. There are some beautiful trout streams around Valdivia.
- I don't remember the name of this river, but it was good fishing. I was with a guide and caught roughly 40 trout (mostly small). We had a great lunch with mate (a tea from Argentina) afterwards and then a siesta. Very relaxing.

- Rita and I at a well known beer garden outside of Valdivia. Many Germans settled in Valdivia and Kuntsman beer from Valdivia is sold throughout Chile. We drink it in Santiago.
- There is a great fish market along the river in Valdivia. These are some of the shell fish for sale.
- There are private ferries for crossing the river. Not quite the Washington State Ferries.

- Most houses in Valdivia still burn wood for heating. The wood is delivered like this to be cut and spilt for the stoves. This picture also shows a typical street in Valdivia.
- The same wood after cutting and splitting.
- Here is the Pacific Ocean a few miles south of Washington. Like Washington the ocean on the coast of Chile is very cold from the current coming from the south.

- It is not common, but families still do travel with a horse and wagon.
- One of the neighborhoods in Valdivia. You can see how the houses are built.
- Valdivia was celebrating its 450th birthday. Yes, it is that old! The sky divers were trying to see who could land closest to a small raft in the middle of the river. Astral University is in the background across the river.
